About Maria Montessori~
Maria Montessori was the first woman in Italy to become a medical doctor. In the early 1900s, she became intrigued by how children learn and began studying and researching. A Montessori curriculum is based on Dr. Montessori’s direct scientific observation of the children and how and when they learn and her broad background in medicine and education.
Current research on brain development and the most effective educational models validate Dr. Montessori’s method and many public schools across the nation have adopted this curriculum. The program includes solid academic preparation, social skills, and strong character development. This begins with infants and toddlers and can continue through young adulthood. Montessori education occurs in a carefully prepared environment where learning and work are seen as the means to happiness, self-knowledge, and a deep respect for oneself, for others, and for the world.
The hands-on approach of the Montessori math materials especially prepare children to succeed in mathematics. The Montessori curriculum includes: practical life, sensorial, mathematics, language, geography, social studies, and science including biology and botany. Within each of these areas is a vast array of learning activities which will engage every child.
